Security By Design, Its Principles and Benefits

As a product manager, I led the development of some cool products, these products were targeted at the millennials, Generation Z and X. It cut across a very rich divide of people who had time, money, and energy.

Due to the target audience, the risk of cyber-attacks increased because information across 50 years of human living could be available. A potential for cyberattack and loss of data.

How do you mitigate the risk and provide a product that meets and exceeds expectations? How do you create a product that is accepted by three different generations?

As a millennial, I have learned from the Baby Boomers and Generation X, I am formed to be conservative and cautious, I was not born with the digital technology in my brain, I grew with it.

In Context, the Security by Design framework helps product managers, developers, or organizations build applications, platforms, and products that are secured by default. In explicit terms, security is important and necessary at every block or milestone of the development lifecycle.

Security by Design is a total and holistic approach that integrates the principles and practices of security into the development life cycle of any software, product, or application.

In the implementation of the framework, a proper risk assessment needs to be conducted from the people, technology, and process phases.
  • The framework needs to be accepted by all stakeholders and incorporated as a fundamental of the process.
  • There must be the opportunity for continuous awareness and education about the risks, their associated impacts, and mitigation steps.
  • The framework does not have an end date. New product updates or development, security practices must be a culture.

Some Benefits of Security by Design

  • It reduces exposure to cyber-attacks and breaches
  • It is a cheaper method of Implementing SDLC because additional costs to incorporate mitigation strategies or accepting risks are likely eliminated
  • Builds trust and compliance among various stakeholders
  • It boldens and strengthens a positive work culture with colleagues and customers.
  • It incorporates all the pillars of Information Security from the bit.
  • The framework helps with risk identification, incident response, and analysis.
  • A sustainable and agile approach to growth

Besides the importance of the Security by Design framework in our Development Lifecycle, this framework can be applied in all works of life. In fact, it is very applicable in politics, Governance, Health, and many other areas. As key political leaders, plan and strategize the right product or initiatives to help their citizens, This approach will help in building resilience and sustainability into every program designed for the country.

Like a chess game built on strategy and skills, security by design is a strategic piece for development across multiple areas.
